You know everything you need to know about yo-yo's right? Here at Radar Toys we thought exactly the same thing. All of us remember yo-yo's from our youth they go down, they come up, and some people can do tricks with them. That about sums it up, right? To put it mildly not even close. .
About a week ago we accepted an invitation to take a tour of one of the coolest companies in the yo-yo industry, One Drop Yo Yo's. They pledged to roll out the red carpet and give us our true yo-yo education about the sport, the industry, and the community of enthusiasts surrounding yo-yo's. We had a blast, their team was incredibly sincere and passionate, and we learned a ton of fascinating things about the real world of yo-yo's. Without boring you guys to sleep, lets take a peak at something that us here at Radar, and most people for that fact, have never seen:

Wow. Do I need two wow's here? We had never seen yo-yo's get that busy before. Our first question was obviously how? At Radar we like to think that we have some semi yo-yo skills. We're no rookies. We can make the yo-yo sleep, we can walk the dog, and also do some triangle thing that we have no name for. But this is yo-yo action that we've never seen before. The One Drop guys schooled us right away.
First -- you need a special kind of yo-yo. The yo-yo you got for Christmas from the local toy store is not going to cut it in this arena of awesomeness. It's not that Mom and Dad's yo-yo is bad, its just not designed for this kind of action. Typical yo-yo's that all of us remember are called responsive yo-yo's. That means, you tug on the string and up they come. The yo-yo you saw in the video, and the ones that are used by veterans and enthusiasts, like the kind made by One Drop, are called unresponsive yo-yo's.
Unresponsive yo-yo's require the skill of a trick called binding to return the yo-yo to the individual's hand. Laugh now, because the Radar Toys team looked stellar trying to accomplish this. Unresponsive yo-yo's are where the awesomeness of both the tricks, and quality of the manufacturing of yo-yo's really flourishes.
The team at One Drop gave us a wicked tour of their shop and we watched a brilliant yo-yo being machined, assembled, and packaged. We cannot stress enough to you how cool this was to see. Check out these pictures:
Needless to say, we were hooked right out of the gate. It was eye opening to be exposed to the veteran side of the sport of yo-yo's. Yo-yo's are so much more than you thought they were, and to all the dedicated enthusiasts we apologize for preaching to the choir, but what we saw at One Drop was amazing. We've been obsessed since the tour. I think someone on our staff even has a successful bind under their belt. We would like to extend our gratitude to the team at One Drop for their hospitality -- oh, and did we mention that they sent us home with an epic yo-yo that we're barely qualified to own? Thanks guys. Lastly, check out the One Drop site here and see what high quality, precision yo-yo's are all about:
