When I was a kid, I had the practice of wearing small rubber bands on my wrists: thin, colorful rubber bands. I flashed them in public and gestured in such a way that people surely noticed them. I used to think the more I put on, the better I looked. Most people however just stared back at me as I get passed by them. There was an odd look in their eyes that made me uncomfortable: I regarded that at first as their means of saying "cool" silently. I never saw that look from anyone of my friends though. It was either for that reason that I reduced the number of bands I wore to only two or maybe I just hated admitting to myself that the way I dressed up before was lame.
I soon realized these products, however simple they may appear, seemed to have influenced fashion and fun in a certain way. Pranksters exercise usage of these for one of their practical jokes; magicians employ their use to entertain audiences in magic trick shows; ladies can be seen using these in their hair as ponytails; gentlemen, (and some girls) on the other hand, utilize rubber bands for propelling their toy airplanes or simply fire them as ammunitions for rubber band guns, not to mention the fact that even manufacturing companies recognize its use in general.
Small rubber bands are short length of rubber and latex that form the shape of a loop and appear in a variety of colors, designs and sizes. A characteristic sports center in a shopping mall may house a public display of rubber bracelets from solid, primary colors to artistic combinations. They also appear in thick, thin, long or short sizes. Creative rubber band innovations are being introduced commercially every now and then. The brands compete in a contest to get the lion's share in the market, which most of the time, is awarded to whoever creates or recreates new versions of currently available products the best. Its availability in varied decorative designs and existing brands are advertised on the internet and on cable television. Advertisements of these products indicate a minimum age of fi ve years old to avoid the probable ingestion or other mishaps.
Previous designs of this sort, driven by its intense popularity, push manufacturers to produce more. Just recently, these products have been significantly improved by incorporating silicone. This substance has provided rubber bands with better durability and longevity without altering any major characteristics as per the products' quality. Elasticity was greatly improved as well; an added reason why these products are recommended for kids. Even after multiple usages, even small rubber bands still maintain its original size and shape.
Kids, youth and adults alike find interest in its purpose of delivering fun and fashion. What once originated in England are now a trend maker and a fad in the whole wide world. Not until the recent demands for more rubber bands have been satisfied or outwitted, the craving for these products will continue to live with the society.
